Naturalist Weekend

June 25-26

172984823_s.jpg

To build authentic relationship with the wild world, we need to read what's happening on the landscape around us! Join Jonathan Shapiro of Fox Paw School for an intro to the land as we learn to identify and interpret what we see in the more-than-human realm.

We'll construct a broad-scale ecological framework of the area, then focus on tree and plant ID, animal tracking, and bird language/identification, and connect it to the cycle of the seasons. And of course, we'll have time for contemplation of and gratitude to the beings with whom we share our home.

Most of our time will be in the field, with a few short classroom segments.

On-site camping and four meals are included (Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast and lunch). Those students who are coming from farther away may want to arrive Friday evening to be ready to begin Saturday morning.

Cost: $200

Limit of 10 students

Fire Walk

With Certified Firewalk Instructors Christina Tsang and Weaver Goldsmith

June 25-26

Elemental Alchemy from an Animistic Perspective with Ceremonial Firewalk

The four elements are the building blocks of everything in the universe including ourselves. Traditionally, these elements have been treated as relatives and as our beloved elders. Through intentional engagement with the elements, we can work through the patterns and beliefs that have limited us from experiencing our fullest potential. During this weekend journey, we will engage in practices and rituals to joyfully connect with and honor each element. They are crafted to initiate one into the experience of direct gnosis, or learning from the natural world herself. We will complete our time together with a ceremonial firewalk. In this ancient ritual, we celebrate the height of summer by burning away limitations, and harvesting the gifts that were hidden in our fears/ shadow.

Christina and Weaver are Sundoor Certified Firewalk Instructors and have been practitioners of the healing arts for over 15 years. They are initiated in the lineages of Amazonian, Andean and contemporary shamanism, the Mexica Mystery School tradition, and indigenous healing ceremonies of Turtle Island. They are students of nature and passionate about wellness, wildcrafting, gardening, and radical mycology.

On-site camping is included.  Meals are included with the $200 class fee (Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast and lunch).  Those students who are coming from farther away may want to arrive Friday evening to be ready to begin Saturday morning.

Cost: $200 Class and Firewalk

Green Wood Carving

With Emilie Rigby

September 10-11

IMG_20210716_141103_839.jpg

Green Woodworking (noun): the process of carving and shaping wood before it has cured. Greenwood is easy to carve and offers a wide range of possibilities that cured wood does not.

About the Instructor:

Emilie Rigby is a green woodworker who has been carving for 11 years. She has traveled across the country, teaching woodworking and outdoor skills. She landed in Portland, OR in 2017 where she ran a teaching woodshop for a prominent outdoor skills company. With 6 years of teaching experience, she has taught green woodworking to people aged 8 to 80. She recently moved back to Upstate NY where she has continued to build her life as a woodworker and artist. She is endlessly inspired by the natural world, where many elements of her designs can be found. Her classes are open to all experience levels, and beginners are welcome and encouraged.

What to Bring (for the workshop):

A notebook and writing utensil

Water bottle and snacks

Work gloves (optional)

Whatever tools you have that you want to talk about (optional)

What to Expect:

The weekend workshop will cover fundamentals in green woodworking, including carving safety and foundational techniques, all while creating a series of simple yet useful projects. We will also cover several finishing and decoration techniques. The classes blend demo time and work time in order to maximize learning. We take regular breaks for snacks and show-and-tell. You’ll leave the workshop with a head full of knowledge, several finished projects, and the ability to craft logs into useful items. All materials and tools are included, with the option to purchase tools to take home at the end of the workshop.
